In 2021, One Summit had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jonny Kim as part of our “Stories from the Summit” series, which provided a community connection during the pandemic. At just 41 years old, Dr. Jonny Kim has already lived several lifetimes of extraordinary achievements: Navy SEAL, Harvard-trained physician, One Summit mentor, and now officially a NASA astronaut. His journey is a testament to the power of resilience, purpose, and service—qualities that continue to inspire the young warriors of One Summit and beyond.
In April 2025, Dr. Jonny Kim embarked on his first spaceflight, joining Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft. Launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, they docked with the International Space Station (ISS) three hours later. During his eight-month mission, Jonny will conduct scientific research and technology demonstrations to support future space missions and benefit life on Earth.
Kim's path to the stars is a testament to resilience. From a challenging childhood in Los Angeles, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 16, becoming a Navy SEAL and completing over 100 combat missions. His experiences led him to pursue medicine, earning a degree from Harvard Medical School.
In our Stories from the Summit series, Kim emphasized the importance of focusing on singular goals and committing fully, stating, "We do our best when we are completely committed in both mind and spirit." Now aboard the ISS, he continues to inspire by demonstrating leadership in the face of new challenges. Dr. Jonny Kim's journey—from the battlefield to the operating room to space—embodies the spirit of resilience, reminds us that with determination, community, and commitment, we can overcome obstacles and strive for excellence.
